Xbox Gone Redundant

Microsoft has no idea what the fuck they are doing. This much has been obvious since last summer when they introduced “SmartGlass” as their next big “innovation”. I use sarcastic quotes because by “innovation” they mean using the tablet or smartphone you already own to do things the tablet or smartphone can natively do. Most damningly they took a preexisting Game of Thrones app for iPad, packaged it inside SmartGlass and pretended like this would change the world. It was an embarrassing attempt to insert an Xbox branded service where it does not belong. Unfortunately, this buttinski attitude is obviously[…]

Fact Checking: Is Bungie’s Next Game Xbox Exclusive?

In a perhaps unfortunate turn of events for independent developer Bungie, due to the ongoing legal battle between their new publisher and the founders of Infinity Ward, the terms of their publishing agreement signed with Activision in the spring of 2010 have become public. Buried in the 27 page contract, along with a lot of boring sections on employee compensation and publisher liability, were a few scant details on a series of four original games currently under development. What is revealed is fairly vague. The “Destiny” games are described as “massively multiplayer-style sci-fantasy action-shooters” set to be released every other[…]

LTTP: My First Two Weeks with the Xbox 360

Prologue In the summer of 2005, I made the fateful decision to go back to school full time in order to receive a bachelor’s degree. That probably isn’t very interesting to you, but the upshot was that being a poor student prevented me from participating in this console generation. Sure, I went to the occasional party where everyone got drunk and tried to play Marble Mania and Excite Truck on the Wii, but for the three years it took to graduate I mostly gamed on my PC and my trusty PS2. In 2008 I had the good fortune of graduating[…]

E3 2010: Microsoft’s Waterloo

The fact that, after spending over an hour talking up their new camera-based, hands-free motion controller for the Xbox 360, Kinect, Microsoft failured to address the question of price is not only conspicuous, it’s damning. Perhaps no one would have noticed had the software demonstrated for Kinect been surprising or revolutionary, or even interesting. Since last E3, Microsoft has promoted the technology behind Project Natal as nothing short of a paradigm shift. Turns out there were more right than they realized. Unfortunately for them, the paradigm being shifted is the management at Microsoft’s grip on reality. So, after all the hype[…]

Bullet Point BS: 4/12/2009

Trying something new today, with news and commentary all snipped up the way you twitter-kiddies like it. The Gears of War 3 announcement really got away from Epic and Microsoft last week when CliffyB got bumped from Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night and the shambling infrastructure of Xbox Live marketing failed to react to the new reality. But Epic’s “Face Man” got his camera time tonight and you can see the whole segment, including the premiere trailer on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon webnet. The Gears 3 video is entitled “Ashes to Ashes” and features a cinematic sequence set to moody acoustic rock by[…]

MS Announces the Solitaire Live social network

Today Microsoft launched a new version of their venerable solitaire game built-in to every Windows release since version 3.0. Published through Windows Update for Windows Vista and Windows 7, this latest incarnation features an integrated connection to the new “Solitaire Live” social gaming network. Much as Bioware and Ubisoft have launched new social networking sites linked to high profile releases such as Dragon Age: Origins and Assassin’s Creed II, respectively, MS is hoping to leverage the popularity of computer solitaire to launch their own site where players can connect, compare best scores, show off in game achievements and purchase DLC.[…]
